Holiday Magic Garden Railroad Display Construction – December 2017

The Charles Paddock Zoo has invited the Central California Coast Garden Railroad Society to build and operate a large scale train layout during the zoo’s annual “Holiday Magic” event on Saturday, 16-Dec-2017 from 10:00 AM through 1:00 PM. The layout will continue to operate until 4:00 PM on the same day.
Update (12-Dec-2017)

Dennis Cementina, Walt Wajda, and Mark Edwards completed construction of the track-powered layout today. The roadbed was leveled and secured. A custom built bridge spanning the layout’s water feature and passing siding were installed. Live trees and structures were placed within the miniature landscape. Curious zoo visitors questioned CCCGRS members about the process, and “how could I have something like this a my yard.” Crowds of both parents and children gathered as the test trains traversed the new display.

We are expecting a very positive response to our efforts, with lots of opportunities to share our hobby with an entirely new group of guests as they celebrate Holiday Magic at the Charles Paddock Zoo.  CCCGRS members interested in assisting with operation and interacting with zoo guests during the day of the event should email Mark Edwards at contact@cccgrs.org.

An LGB Porter stops at the station siding of the track powered layout, which can now accommodate two track powered locomotives. Thanks again to  Walt’s creativity!

Update (26-Nov-2017).

Alan Baker, the zoo’s director, has identified a generous area for a ground level layout, which includes a crossing over an existing water feature. The large scale train layout will be a new additional for guests attending the popular “Holiday Magic” event. Discussions have already begun regarding CCCGRS participation in future events at this unique San Luis Obispo County destination.

The track plan for the display has been established and construction of the roadbed is complete. Remnants of a palm tree had to be removed to allow the trains to pass. Sectional LGB track was installed to ensure a proper fit, and a locomotive was successful operated to ensure track continuity.

Track, building and other installation will be completed on Tuesday, 12-Dec-2017. CCCGRS members interested in assisting with construction or operation during the day of the event should email Mark Edwards at contact@cccgrs.org.
