Custom-Built Mortar Car

Bernie Meister built this custom model using a civil war photo of the prototype for reference . The mortar is scratch built from brass that he turned on a lathe. The steel sides of the mortar were cut from some scrap. The entire mortar was painted grey to match the photo. The assembly was mounted on a flat car with an added the wood barrier shield with some thin wood covered with polystyrene sheets that look like real wood planks. Ball bearings were used for cannon balls added the final detail.

Nicely done, Bernie. We are anxious to see many of the other unique details you have personally created for the Conejo and Tortuga Railroad.

Bernie Meister’s latest project is a American civil war era mortar flat car to be pulled by a 4-4-0 locomotive as a period piece. (Bernie Meister, image).
